Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Address
During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Defying advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
