New Yorkers will find out the identity of their next mayor this election day, in a contest that will decide who runs and protects the nation's largest city at a time when the former president has vowed to deploy armed forces to the urban center.

In this context, New York has experienced a race for mayor that has matched two distinctly opposing Democrats against each other. The election has turned into an acrimonious face-off, laced with accusations of racial bias and anti-Muslim sentiment, but it is the political differences between the two leading contenders that could have significant consequences for how the party fares in next year's midterm elections.

The Rising Progressive

On the left side is Zohran Mamdani, the young progressive candidate whose rapid ascent and people-powered movement has brought international attention. Representing the old guard is the former governor, the former New York governor now running as an independent – and enjoying the support of ultra-rich donors and big business.

As the election approaches, it is Mamdani, the one-time underdog who defeated his opponent in the party primary who is firmly installed as the frontrunner. Mamdani, who has run on a platform of affordability and pledged to halt rent increases for about two million New Yorkers, has led Cuomo by double-digits in every poll conducted in the fall, and it is very much the younger man's election to lose.

The Controversial Campaign

Recently, Cuomo was strongly criticized as bigoted after sharing an AI-generated ad that included a slew of racial caricatures and showed Mamdani freeing a group of criminals.

This represents a particularly ugly conclusion to an election that could be key to the direction that the Democratic party, floundering in its response to Trump's power moves, adopts in the near future.

Should Mamdani wins convincingly, the establishment party leaders who have refused to endorse his campaign will be forced to reckon with a message that has appealed to Americans' anger at inequality, inflation and the establishment. However, should the former governor, who had been expected to win easily in the Democratic primary, achieve a remarkable comeback victory, it could reinforce national Democrats' current model of cautious, uninspiring opposition – a strategy that has infuriated the party base. A New York defeat of Mamdani's optimistic platform could persuade Schumer and Jeffries that the wisest course is to stick to the center – even as polls show the present version of the party is deeply unpopular across the country.

Voter Enthusiasm

Voters in New York seem to prefer the Mamdani vision. Surveys show that his backers are far more enthusiastic about their candidate than his opponent's supporters, something that has been apparent throughout the campaign.
