Two Separate Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Sailboats Declared Lost after Leaving Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery operation is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailing vessels carrying relief goods en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Rescue Missions Initiated
Mexico has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine total crew members, per a military release.
The vessels had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.
The Situation of Relief to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island endures widespread national electricity failures.
"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and emergency beacons," an official for the convoy commented.
The nine crew members are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Recent Relief Shipment
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and food.
Broader Geopolitical Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
International organizations have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from various leaders highlighting the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.
Responding to certain proposals, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that initial phases of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains unclear.
The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
