This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
