The Culling Game in Jujutsu Kaisen is framed as one of the most bone-chilling acts of jujutsu terrorism in the annals of history. Season 3 has been steadily peeling back the disturbing facets of this battle royale, though its final objective remains unknown to the participants themselves. Yuta Okkotsu joined the fray following the events of the third episode, with Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro subsequently striving to recruit companions and devise strategies to endure. Yuji and Megumi were separated immediately upon entering Tokyo Colony No. 1, culminating in an exciting confrontation between Megumi and the reincarnated sorcerer Reggie Star in the tenth episode.

The Cunning of a Strategist and a System's Empty Triumph

While episode 11 cements Megumi Fushiguro's reputation as a brilliant tactical mind, it also casts a spotlight on the profoundly paradoxical nature of the Culling Game. With the most powerful jujutsu users at the whim of a game that functions as a deathtrap, the series challenges what it means to be the "strongest" in a society that scorns the weak. It is not about defeating every enemy to demonstrate superiority—it's about revealing how pointless that type of strength is within a rigged system.

The Climax of a Duel

The previous episode concluded with Megumi unleashing his incomplete domain, Chimera Shadow Garden, inside a confined gym. The penultimate episode of season 3, part 1 picks up with Reggie underestimating this move due to his anti-domain technique, Hollow Wicker Basket. Reggie's unique cursed technique enables him to remain unharmed by countering domain expansions that utilize a cursed technique, which nullifies any guaranteed hits. However, since Hollow Wicker Basket does not counter cursed techniques themselves, its efficacy is contingent upon the presence of a barrier. Megumi's domain, being not fully realized, lacks a barrier altogether, which is precisely why he lured Reggie into the enclosed gymnasium to serve as a physical barrier. This strategic move allows Megumi to assault Reggie with manifestations of his technique, taking his opponent by surprise with this ingenious workaround.

The visual presentation has been exceptional this season. The clash between Megumi and Reggie is crafted with visible love, incorporating shaky-cam movements and fisheye lenses to convey a sense of immediacy and dynamism.

Even the sight of Megumi struggling to maintain his domain stable while burdened by the force of Reggie's conjured vehicles is awe-inspiring to behold. The gymnasium's shadowy interior illuminates with Megumi's blue cursed energy, dragging Reggie into the abyss of his Ten Shadows Technique. Although Reggie fights valiantly to counter Megumi, he is outsmarted at each juncture. Reggie tries to crush Megumi by summoning a small house, but it breaks through the floor, sending them into the pool located beneath the gymnasium. At this moment, it becomes evident that Megumi had not retreated fearfully—he had strategically guided Reggie into a carefully laid snare, which concludes with Megumi dispelling his domain once Reggie's drenched receipts become unusable.

A Hollow Triumph

After a tense fist fight, Megumi stuns Reggie with Divine Dog: Totality to deliver the final blow. In his dying moments, Reggie compares sorcerers to deceivers while praising Megumi's cunning. It is then that Reggie reveals he was never in cahoots with Kenjaku; he was merely a bystander who became entangled in the Culling Game. Megumi brings up Master Tengen to elicit a possible admission about his involvement, but Reggie's final words linger on the pointlessness of the game itself. These words render Megumi's victory feel hollow as he grasps that Tengen may not have been totally forthcoming about the real purpose of the Game. Megumi has already been compelled to kill two sorcerers in self-defense, an act that must weigh heavily on him despite his belief that the means justify the end if he wishes to save Tsumiki.

Kenjaku's Enigmatic Goal

Kenjaku's true endgame remains the most compelling element of the story. He appears to be using the Culling Game as a direct method to cull the weakest within the sorcerer world. The immense stress of the matches may even trigger new cursed techniques among the strongest participants. An false sense of agency is at play, as the game's convoluted system mask the fact that it is, in essence, a ruthless mass murder ritual. This "adapt or die" dynamic radically changes the definition of the "most powerful," as it does not boil down solely to the raw strength of one's technique.

We are offered a glimpse of this when narration states that Fumihiko Takaba's Comedian technique is so potent it could even oppose Satoru Gojo's Limitless, yet Takaba remains completely ignorant of his own strength. Another sorcerer often likened to Gojo is Yuta, who ends the episode by eliminating the historical figure Dhruv Lakdawalla in the Sendai Colony. Lakdawalla's death breaks the stalemate in that colony, setting the stage for intense battles involving Yuta in the upcoming finale.

The Fundamental Paradox

The tragic irony of the Culling Game is the false promise of power it sells to its top combatants. The architect ultimately wishes to use Sukuna as a "bomb" to trigger the collapse of jujutsu society, a process that will inherently threaten the weak and defenseless. This dynamic between the strong and the weak was explored in depth in a previous story arc, where Gojo and Suguru Geto held completely different worldviews. A young Gojo, in his hubris, had separated his status as the "strongest" from moral responsibility, while a young Geto believed that strength only has value if it safeguards the vulnerable. These perspectives flip after a tragic event, pushing Geto toward a genocidal rampath driven by his disdain for non-sorcerers. Meanwhile, Gojo's trauma leads him to understand that strength is meaningless without a younger generation of sorcerers to carry an empowered legacy rooted in empathy—an empathy that encompasses the safety of non-sorcerers, who must be shielded from the noxious influence of curses.

The series season 3 compromises this vision for a more compassionate society with Kenjaku's plan to fuse all people with Tengen. This apathetic goal disregards individuality and views jujutsu sorcerers as pawns used for fulfilling empty whims. Following the rules of the Culling Game offers no assurance of survival, especially since the outcomes are rigged but fluid. The promise of a winner is a falsehood, just as a world without survivors is as devoid of meaning as a fleeting illusion. With this story arc concluding next week, we will be one step closer to witnessing the mockery that the Culling Game makes of its most gifted sorcerers.
