The Former Congresswoman Establishes History as First Female Governor

Over two and a half centuries, Virginia has been led by seventy-four governors, all of them male. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger overcame this glass ceiling by winning the election as the state's inaugural woman leader in Virginia's history.

Emphasizing Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Opposition

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA operative won with a campaign that stressed everyday expenses and strategically targeted Donald Trump's policies instead of the individual.

Early Life and Academic Journey

Born in the Garden State on 7 August 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at her early teens. Her father was an military serviceman who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.

She attended the Virginia's flagship university, obtaining a degree in French studies. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before embarking on a life of service.

“I was raised knowing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger shared with attendees at a gathering in the city of Norfolk last Saturday.

Professional Path

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she investigated involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the sole female on the arrest team. She then entered the CIA and focused on counter-terrorism cases, serving undercover and internationally.

Family Decision

In 2014, she and her spouse, an engineer, considered their future. Living on the west coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They took out a world map and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we chose to transition from a national duty, to state involvement because she was right. All our relatives lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in her home state, she participated in an advocacy organization, which addresses firearm incidents, and founded a youth group. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which others told her was a “impossible task” because no Democrat had won the seventh district in half a century.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was implementing with his actions and how he was dividing communities. And I saw my member of Congress consistently work against the Affordable Care Act. And I felt I had to step up. So for the record: I was victorious.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In Washington, she quickly became associated with the moderate Democrats, a alliance of moderate and fiscally moderate Democrats. She concentrated on less visible matters: expanding internet access to rural areas, fighting narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She quickly established a reputation for partnering with Republicans and was often cited as the most bipartisan representative of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt alienated moderate voters, warning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be used against them in swing areas.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a member of the “mod squad” in contrast to the progressive “group” of the New York representative.

State Leadership Bid

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a another term and would rather run for governor in 2025.

Her campaign focused on ideas of civic duty, support for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her intelligence experience gave her authority on national security issues and she described public service as a vocation instead of a career.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to counter Republican opponent her challenger's attacks on social topics, notably the assertion that she is an extremist on civil rights and transgender healthcare.

Spanberger, who stated that local school districts should determine whether trans youth can compete in competitive sports, portrayed her opponent as the contender more out of step with the center of the state's voters.
