At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
