Loved ones whose relatives buried in resting places at risk from shoreline retreat argue that indecision on how best to tackle the problem is causing them unnecessary distress about the eternal homes of their loved ones.

An Impending Threat to Historic Churchyards

The council have singled out three burial grounds in the communities of Happisburgh, Trimingham, and Mundesley as being at risk of being engulfed by the ocean in the next few generations.

A recent report on the issue sets out a range of possible actions, from doing nothing to disinterring bodies and reburying them in safer locations. Authorities maintain it is for the community to determine how to proceed.

“At the moment we’re in limbo. It causes me distress. My parents wanted this to be their final resting place, but it isn’t going to be because of the sea.”

Estimates suggest at least a portion of one churchyard could fall into the waves in the next 80 years, but some residents worry it will happen much sooner. “I think it’s got less than 20 years, if you consider what’s occurred in the last 30 years,” a farmer stated.

Haunted by the Past

A local business owner recalled a school trip to the neighbouring settlement of Eccles, which has largely disappeared into the sea, including its church and graveyard.

“You could see people’s bones,” she said. “Some have this romantic idea that the deceased will just get washed out to sea. That is not the case. Individuals will collect remains as mementos and go grave robbing looking for valuables. It’s completely undignified.”

“I fear that the identical fate that befell at Eccles will occur here and there’ll be skeletons on the beach. I would feel appalled by that.”

A Soldier's Grave in Peril

Along the coast is situated the grave of a ex-soldier who died while serving overseas. His mother expressed she could not sleep after discovering her child's grave might one day be moved.

“It does disturb me to think this won’t be his lasting resting place,” she said. “For us it’s an significant site to visit.”

In her view, new burials should cease but says it is premature to exhume existing graves. “My preference for now is to do nothing and watch carefully, but an early decision must be made when a tipping point has been reached.”

Seeking Solutions and Clarity

An absence of agreement over when and how to tackle the challenge has left bereaved families feeling exasperated and anxious.

Some want more coastal protections to slow the inevitable erosion and to allow burials to proceed for now. Others contend the moment for moving graves is approaching.

“It is very emotional,” said one relative. “The official study was thorough, but now there’s confusion about how it is implemented. And all parties is avoiding responsibility over who is responsible.”

A local official said the burial sites were owned and managed of the church authorities. “In the end it is up to them to decide the direction to take. We are here to assist them through that journey with residents.”

It was also stated there was time to consider all the choices. “We are talking decades before it begins getting lost.”

“There is no unified opinion on what should be done yet. We need good community discussions to discover the appropriate solutions for each village.”

The possibility of the loss of the churches and graveyards was described as one of “immense sadness for the local community,” but church representatives also referenced a doctrine in life after death, providing a theological perspective on the physical loss of hallowed earth.
