Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison

He contested the legal system and justice triumphed.

Two months after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks destined for incarceration.

Imminent Imprisonment

The convicted instigator – who has been under residential detention in his estate while a number of court processes and appeals unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the next few days, amidst mounting talk that he will be sent to a well-known top-security prison.

Past Statements on Inmates

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the right-wing ex- military man showed minimal mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“Why should we provide those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to end up in prison, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Speculation

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, a group of four this week visited the facility in an obvious bid to prevent the high court from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, stated he expected the 70-year-old figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the result of a near-fatal knife attack during the last political campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is highly critical. He won’t be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells holding forty prisoners: “That is virtually one meter squared per detainee.

“We spoke to the convicts and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

Lucas is not the only voice speaking out before the former president’s expected imprisonment.

Authoring in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its past”.

“This is an wrong that eats away the hearts of countless of Brazilians,” he stated.

Divided General Reaction

It is possibly correct given the significant backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. But his expected incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of many other people who feel he ought to be jailed for plotting to block his successor from becoming president – and even scheming to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the sitting leader's Workers’ party, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to get proper treatment – but respectful handling behind bars. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have long praising the tough handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently argued that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to visit a prison to discover what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, insulting treatment”.

Potential Incarceration Facilities

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now houses about thousands of prisoners, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “particular” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are much more adequate than those in the primary facility, although still a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the impressive official residence, about 20 kilometers away.

According to information, the room Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the area of a couple of car spots – and includes a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot balcony. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a TV and additionally a minibar in his cell as long as they were donated by his relatives,” sources suggested.

Ideological Reactions

The lawmaker denounced the talked-about proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his outcome in the {
