Our Household Alternative Gaming of the Year List for The Past Year
Well, what did you think of 2025 in your household? Could it be described as all as good as one might claim on Facebook? Packed with top marks for the kids and wild costume celebrations for the parents? Or perhaps it was a sea of disappointment with only rare enjoyable highlights? Is any of this actually real, or is everyone now seven-fingered AI slop beings with perfect dental work?
I have gathered everyone together, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the paramount thing in any given year: which video games we played the most. So here goes:
Release Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my games column."
In the mobile realm, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In real life."
Game Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Point taken.
Title Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her avatar has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has in the real world.
Game the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a persistent critic. When he complains, I reply that I am behaving this way to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for mature audiences. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is unstoppable. Even better than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you eventually realize and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my issues so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after evening drinks.
Title That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was late to it. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. The core concept is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different joker cards are so inventive it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a bit of backlash when I wrote about how a technical issue in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the reader who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I mention that in the exact way, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". Great fun. I get that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when most games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the garden at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
