NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Report Immigration Images Following Arrests of Four US Citizens
The state AG has introduced a new digital platform encouraging locals to provide photos and videos of immigration raids around the state. This action comes just a shortly after a significant enforcement action shook NYC's Chinatown, prompting large-scale demonstrations.
American Citizens Detained In Enforcement Action
A US congressman announced during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were arrested and kept for "about 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to live without fear," state officials declared in a release.
"Anyone who observed and recorded ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to share that material with the authorities. We are committed to examining these submissions and determining any violations of law."
Form Details
The platform provides options to send photos and videos of the incident, plus a field to specify geographic details. Before submitting, submitters must check a box that states that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, including in a court case or official statement."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say involved dozens of ICE personnel, occurred in a popular area of Manhattan where fake products and additional items are regularly available widely – often to tourists.
Videos of the operation reveal numerous masked and armed personnel restraining and arresting a person, and pushing back witnesses. Masses of New Yorkers trailed the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was observed rolling through the urban roads.
Political Response
In a news conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be taken for no reason." He said the individuals were let go on the following day with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman remarked. "This constitutes a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is purely a excuse to incite violence for the government to bring in the military to stop conflict that they themselves caused."
Broad Criticism
Anger over the federal action quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates condemned the incident, as did the state leader.
"Yet again, the Trump administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, instead of protection. It has to end," one mayoral candidate stated.
New York City immigrant rights groups expressed outrage as well.
"Federal officers raided Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and protective equipment to target small merchants working to survive. This action had no relation to community security and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," remarked the president of a advocacy group.
Agency Rules
ICE policy prohibits the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has stated it refrains from arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has discovered that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by federal agents since the start of the existing leadership.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been cropping up increasingly in the state and across the US this year.
A recent action in central NYC was the first known raid on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations targeting ICE are ubiquitous as are allegations of force and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
