Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
Israelis have come together throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent delegate familiar with the talks revealed that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, due to differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have still not achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Key Issues in Discussions
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict governance of the region
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No place feels like home anymore and until each abducted person return no one will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence recover," she continued.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do every compromise necessary for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population want the war to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the music event, mourners assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the western district, Rimal and zone areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"As the night falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city reported two more dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medical staff said.
